The short answer
If your heater won't start, short cycles, makes new noises, or heats some rooms but not others, it likely needs a repair visit. Our technicians inspect the whole system, explain what's wrong, and lay out repair and replacement options with a price before any work begins.
Los Angeles winters are mild, but nights in the valleys and foothills still get cold enough that a heater that won't start is a real problem. Most homes here heat with a gas forced-air furnace, a heat pump, or an older wall or floor furnace, and many of these systems sit unused for months before the first cool night. That long idle stretch is often when dust buildup, worn parts and small electrical faults finally show up. AirCore HVAC Repair Service diagnoses and repairs heating systems for homeowners in Los Angeles and surrounding cities. This page covers the warning signs to watch for, what our technicians check, how we think about repairing versus replacing, what affects the cost, and what to expect during a visit.
Signs Your Heater Needs Repair
Heating problems usually give some warning before the system quits completely. Catching them early can mean a simpler fix and fewer cold nights. Watch for any of the following:
- The heater won't turn on, or the blower runs but the air coming out stays cool
- The system starts and stops every few minutes instead of running full cycles
- A burning smell that lasts well beyond the first few minutes of the season
- Banging, squealing, rattling or grinding sounds from the furnace or vents
- A yellow or flickering burner flame instead of a steady blue one
- Some rooms stay warm while others stay cold
- The circuit breaker trips when the heat runs
- Gas or electric bills rise without any change in how you use the heat
- Your carbon monoxide alarm goes off
What We Check During a Heating Repair
A heater that won't start can have a dozen different causes, so we look at the whole system rather than swapping the first part that seems likely. On gas furnaces, our technicians check the thermostat and its wiring, the air filter, the igniter or pilot assembly, the flame sensor, the gas valve and gas pressure, and the burners. We inspect the heat exchanger for cracks or corrosion, look over the flue and venting to confirm exhaust is leaving the home, and test the draft inducer motor, blower motor, capacitor and safety limit switches. We also read any error codes stored on the control board.
On heat pumps, we check the outdoor unit, the reversing valve, the defrost controls, signs of a refrigerant problem, and the backup electric heat strips. Many older Los Angeles homes still rely on wall or floor furnaces, and we inspect those for burner condition, venting and safe operation. Where it matters, we also look at the ductwork for disconnected runs or leaks that can leave rooms cold even when the equipment works.
Repair or Replace?
Most heating calls end in a repair. Igniters, flame sensors, capacitors, pressure switches and blower motors wear out and can usually be replaced without changing the whole system. We lean toward repair when the equipment is in reasonable shape and the fix will restore safe, reliable heat.
Replacement makes more sense when the heat exchanger is cracked, when the system has needed several repairs in a short span, when parts are no longer available, or when the unit was never sized correctly for the home. In those cases we explain why and let you decide. If you are weighing a new gas furnace, keep in mind that the South Coast AQMD limits nitrogen oxide emissions from gas furnaces sold and installed in this region and has been moving that rule toward zero-emission requirements. The district sets and revises the compliance dates, so we check the current rule before recommending equipment.
A heat pump is another option. It handles both heating and cooling, which is useful in hotter inland neighborhoods and during fall Santa Ana heat. If LADWP supplies your electricity, you may qualify for a rebate on a qualifying heat pump system, with the amount based on its efficiency rating; the application is filed after purchase and installation, within 12 months of purchase. Many homes outside the City of Los Angeles are served by Southern California Edison instead, so available rebates depend on your address, and we confirm the current offer before quoting it. The federal 25C tax credit does not apply to heat pumps installed after December 31, 2025.
What Affects the Cost of a Heating Repair
Every repair is priced based on what we find, and we give you the price before any work starts. The main factors include:
- The type of system: gas furnace, heat pump, wall furnace or floor furnace
- Which part has failed and whether it is a common part or a brand-specific one
- Whether the part is in stock or needs to be ordered
- How easy the equipment is to reach, such as a closet versus an attic or crawlspace
- The age and condition of the system
- Whether one problem has caused damage to other components
- Any venting, ductwork or electrical corrections needed for safe operation
How a Heating Repair Visit Works
When you schedule, we ask what the system is doing, what kind of heater you have, and when the problem started. That helps the technician come prepared. On arrival, the technician talks with you about the symptoms, then inspects and tests the system. Once the cause is found, they explain it in plain terms, show you the problem when possible, and give you repair options with pricing. Nothing is done until you approve it.
After the repair, we run the heater through a full cycle to confirm it starts, heats and shuts off properly, and we check for safe venting. We'll also point out anything that may need attention later, such as a dirty filter or worn belt.
Before you call, a few quick checks can save a visit: make sure the thermostat is set to heat and has fresh batteries, replace a clogged filter, confirm the breaker hasn't tripped, and check that the furnace access panel is fully closed, since many furnaces won't run with it loose.
